“47 seconds is how long it took me to understand how to really defend myself in a fight. And it turned out to be the opposite of what I learned in martial arts. At the time of this fight, I was already a black belt. So this was my 1st real fight as a black belt. Johnny’s Dad taught him how to box plus he was a member of the wrestling team. What was profound about the beating he gave me, was not that beating itself. Instead, I learned that although I was considered an expert in martial arts, I knew very little about actual fighting. What I’d previously embraced as fact was useless in a real-life contest. It wasn’t just the physical but also the mental and behavioral aspects of fighting that I then realized were sorely lacking in all my previous training. So this has been my driving force ever since that pivotal 47 seconds.”
